Day 24 - Foncebadon - Ponferrada

Wow!

This was an amazing day.  The weather was incredibly unkind.  Howling gale and heavy rain that never relented.

The day before we had climbed an extra few hundred metres and another five kilometres horizontally.  The aim was to have an easier climb to Cruz de Ferro.  There is a particularly moving scene in the film the way where Martin Sheen reads the following poem.

Lord, may this stone, a symbol of my efforts on the pilgrimage that I lay at the foot of the cross of the Saviour, one day weigh the balance in favour of my good deeds when the deeds of my life are judged. Let it be so.

(traditional pilgrim’s prayer at Cruz de Ferro)

Firstly, Andrew & I forgot to bring stones so there goes that idea.

Secondly, on reflection I decided this was an inappropriate prayer.  It seems a little too Roman Catholic and also works based.  We are accepted by Christ based on belief in Him as saviour not on works.

In any case here are some very bad photos that might also give you a hint of the weather conditions!

No more photos taken that day, no rest breaks just trying to get out of that storm and off the mountain as soon as possible.

Eventually, we arrived at Molinaseca where we upset the staff of the restaurant we entered because of the large puddles of water we left whenever we paused for a second!

That's our new friend Richard on the left.

At that stage; Gordon, Richard and Stefano decided to walk on.  Andrew & I caught a taxi for the last 6 km.  My ankle was killing me, you can see how swollen it was in this photo!

We had promised ourselves a steak dinner as a reward for the terrible day we had but nearly every restaurant was closed.  Fortunately the Chinese all you can eat buffet across the road was open.

Lots of it and quite good quality.  I even had some salad!
